Problem 1 Copper has a density of 8.885 g/cm3, a relative atomic mass of 63.57 and has a facecentered cubic structure. Estimate:
a) How many moles of copper there are in 1 .
b) How many copper atoms there are in 1 .
c) The size of the unit cube.
d) The atomic radius of copper in the solid state.
e) The mass of the copper atom.
Problem 2 Draw the planes whose Miller indices are (421), (112), (1-10) and (-121). State their intercepts on the x- y- and z- axes.
Problem 3
a) Consider a face-centered cubic cell. Construct a primitive cell within this larger cell (make a sketch).
b) Compare the volume of the two cells.
c) How many atoms are there in the primitive cell? How does this compare with the number of atoms in the original cell?
